    Getting ordained with the Universal Life Church is the first step. This will qualify you to solemnize wedding ceremonies anywhere in Ohio.

    While ULC ordinations are recognized across Ohio, the exact process a minister must follow to officiate a wedding can vary from county to county, so it's important to check in with the office that will be issuing the marriage license to see what they require.

  3. Order Wedding Supplies

  4. Perform the Ceremony

    After you complete the wedding ceremony, you must sign the marriage license (along with the couple and their witnesses). Review this document to ensure accuracy before returning it to the issuing office.

Understand the Ohio Wedding Laws

As we've covered, ULC ministers can perform legal weddings in Ohio. But you might be wondering where online-ordained ministers get their authority, what state law says specifically about performing weddings.

  1. Any two consenting adults who are not already married can take part in a legal wedding ceremony.

  2. Ohio law explicitly says that any minister, priest, or religious official can perform weddings, so long as they are 18 years of age or older. That means online-ordained ministers of the Universal Life Church have the same legal authority as clergy from traditional religious denominations to officiate weddings in Ohio.

  3. Marriage licenses in Ohio are valid for 60 days and must be completed and returned to the issuing office within 30 days of the ceremony.

Ohio law specifically authorizes ordained ministers to perform marriages. Here's the relevant statute:

Ohio Rev. Code § 3101.08

Who may solemnize marriages.

An ordained or licensed minister of any religious society or congregation within this state who is licensed to solemnize marriages, a judge of a county court in accordance with section 1907.18 of the Revised Code, a judge of a municipal court in accordance with section 1901.14 of the Revised Code, a probate judge in accordance with section 2101.27 of the Revised Code, the mayor of a municipal corporation in any county in which such municipal corporation wholly or partly lies, the superintendent of the state school for the deaf, or any religious society in conformity with the rules of its church, may join together as husband and wife any persons who are not prohibited by law from being joined in marriage.

License to solemnize marriages.

A minister upon producing to the secretary of state, credentials of the minister's being a regularly ordained or licensed minister of any religious society or congregation, shall be entitled to receive from the secretary of state a license authorizing the minister to solemnize marriages in this state so long as the minister continues as a regular minister in that society or congregation. A minister shall produce for inspection the minister's license to solemnize marriages upon demand of any party to a marriage at which the minister officiates or proposes to officiate or upon demand of any probate judge.

Can a friend officiate my wedding in Ohio?

Yes! Your friend simply needs to get ordained as a minister (which can be done online for free) and be at least 18 years old. They don't need to live in Ohio or have any specific religious background. Many people choose to have a close friend or family member officiate their wedding.

Can I officiate my own family member's wedding in Ohio?

Yes! Ohio law does not prohibit family members from officiating weddings. As long as you're ordained and meet the age requirement of 18, you can officiate for siblings, children, cousins, or other relatives.
