Religious Ceremonies and Rituals
Events which are integral to the religious experience
The physical experiences associated with religion frequently come in the form of familiar ceremonies like baptisms and funerals. These ceremonies feature important expressions of faith. A Biblical burial passage read aloud at a pious Christian's funeral is just as much a reference to their spiritual beliefs as it is a way to honor them. Ceremonies like baptisms and bar and bat mitzvahs formally induct individuals into a religious community, and thus signal those individuals' honest intentions to develop their spirituality there. In these ways, these relatively commonplace events are integral aspect of the religious experiences of their respective religions' true believers.
Because of this importance, the ULC Monastery has gathered information on a number of these ceremonies for its ministers' benefit. The 'Baptisms' and 'Funerals' sections even include planning guides and biblical passage suggestions to help its ministers plan ceremonies of their own.
The ceremonies discussed in this section include:
Baptisms - the rite of admission into the Christian faith where the initiate is generally blessed with holy water
Bar and Bat Mitzvahs - Jewish coming-of-age ceremonies where young Jews are officially inducted into the Jewish community
Funerals - honoring and the recently-deceased by laying them to rest and celebrating their life
Meditation (Technique) - how to meditate for peace of mind and body
Transcendental Meditation - a system of yoga and meditation introduced to the West by the yogi Maharishi Mahesh
Wiccan Rites - rituals and ceremonies of the Wiccan religion
